Welcome to the Technology website of the Smithfield Public Schools!

The goal of this site is to assemble technology resources and information for staff, students, parents, and community members related to the initiatives and goals of the Smithfield Public Schools. We're just getting started, so please check back regularly for additional and updated content.

Support for Online Classes & Activities

Support for students and staff that are participating in virtual classes (online using Google Meet or Google Classroom) can be obtained from the Technology staff at Smithfield Public Schools in the following manner:

  • By email: Email us at technosps@smithfield-ps.org
  • By phone: Dial 401-231-6606 and choose option 5 (Technology) and then option 3 if you are High School, or option 4 if you are Middle School.  Choose option 2 for account password issues. Please be sure to leave a full name and a contact phone number.

EMAIL IS THE BEST OPTION for the quickest response.  DO NOT EMAIL Technology staff directly - all staff see the emails to the above address and we can triage your issue best if you continue to contact us this way.

News and Announcements

  • Exporting your Files and Data from your SPS Google Account
If you are a staff member who is leaving the district or a student who is leaving school, you can export the majority of your files and data from your Smithfield Google account using a tool called Google Takeout. Takeout will allow you to download your files and data so that you can take it with you and access it even after your Smithfield Google account is disabled.

Takeout will allow you to export your email, contacts, calendar, files from Drive, notes from Google Keep, and blog posts from Blogger (staff only). However, you will not be able to use Takeout to export any Google Sites that you may have created, so you will need to download these using separate instructions.

Depending on how many files and how much data you have in your Smithfield Google account, Takeout can take hours (even days) to assemble your account archive, so please plan accordingly (i.e. don't wait until the last minute). Also, you can access Takeout from home using a personal device, so you do not need to be at school or using a school owned device to export your files and data.

Here are some instructions on how to export your files and data, http://techtips.smithfield-ps.org/2016/06/exporting-data-from-your-sps-google.html

  • New Copier Badges
As most staff are aware, we are in the process of making the shift to the new copier badges that will allow all staff members to login to the copiers just by swiping a sticker that you can attach to your staff ID badge. Each school is distributing the copier badges in a way that works best for its staff, so be on the lookout for information specific to your school.

Setting up your copier badge/sticker is very easy and just takes a minute. I have put together illustrated "step by step" instructions to walk you through the process. Teachers in some of the other schools already have their copier badges up and running and it was very simple. If you run into any problems, please let me know and I will be happy to help.

  • Adding a Network Printer or Copier
As the district moves away from costly local ink-jet printers to network-based printers and copiers, you will have the option to add and choose from a number of different devices in your building.  Each network printer and copier has different features and capabilities, including “locked” print jobs to ensure confidentiality.

Here are some instructions on how to add a network printer or copier so that it appears a printing option, https://docs.google.com/a/smithfield-ps.org/document/d/1RoQ828IWfxMlUI2eQP86LrQExUwGPQ5sqlaQppzdQf8/preview
